1953 Dr. Jiro Kawakita, the former chairman of the Institute for Himalayan Conservation, conducted fieldwork in Nepal as a member of the science team of the 1st Mt. Manaslu Climbing Party.
1958 North-Western Nepal Academic Expedition Team, headed by Dr. Jiro Kawakita, conducted anthropological researches in Nepal.
1963-64 The 3rd Multi-Disciplinary Research Team for rice-cultivating ethnic groups of Southeast Asia, headed by Dr. Jiro Kawakita and organized by the Japan Ethnology Association, conducted anthropological researches in Nepal.
1970 Satoshi Okabe, a student of Mountaineering Society of Tokyo Institute of Technology, which was then headed by Dr. Jiro Kawakita, conducted a pre-test for the construction of pipelines and rope lines in the Sikha Valley in the western Nepal.
1973 The P&R Project for the construction of pipelines and rope lines was planned and designed.
January-March 1974 The preliminary survey for the P&R Project was conducted in the Sikha Valley.
July 1974 The Association for Technical Cooperation in the Himalayan Areas (ATCHA) was established.
November 1974

The P&R Project Team was dispatched to the Sikha Valley. Pipelines, rope lines and nature-powered pumps were constructed.iThe 1st phase of the Shikha Projectj@> Details
1976
The pump repair team was dispatched.
1977
The follow-up survey team for the P&R Project was dispatched to the Sikha Valley.
1979
The report by the P&R follow-up survey team "A Study of the Integration of Environmental Conservation into the Development of Remote Areas: exploring general principles with a model of a mountain village in Nepal" was published.
1982
The King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation (KMTNC), an international NGO working for the solution of environmental problems in Nepal, was established.
August-September 1982 The preliminary survey for the 2nd phase of Sikha Project was conducted.
March 1983 Rope lines were constructied in several villages in the Sikha Valley as the 2nd phase of the Sikha Project.
1985
Mountain Ecology Camp (MEC) was held. Nearly 40 volunteers were sent to the Sikha Valley.
1986 The King Mahendra Japan Trust (KMJT), the predecessor of the Institute for the Himalayan Conservation, was established.
1992
Multi-Dimensional Annapurna Conservation Project (MAC Project) was launched.
Basic researches on the forests were conducted.
March 1992 The 1st Mountain Ecology School (MES) was held.
March 1993 The Institute for Himalayan Conservation was established as a result of the merger of the Association for Technical Cooperation in the Himalayan Areas (ATCHA) and the King Mahendra Japan Trust (KMJT).
1993
The survey of the community forests in the Sikha Valley was conducted. Nursery was opened in Chitre Village. Community forests of Chitre Village and Paudwar Village were enclosed. Countermeasures against landslides were devised. Trees for multi-purpose use were introduced.
1994
The survey of community forests of Ramche Village and Nangi Village was conducted. The community forest of Phalante Village was enclosed.
"Chitre Forest Conservation Project" was launched in Chitre Village.
1995
Nursery Assistance Projects in Khibang, Nangi, Aul, Tikot and Chitre Villages were handed over from the Lumle Agriculture Centre, a British ODA project.
November 1995
"A Dream Bridging Japan and Himalayas" was published by Bunshindo Publishing Co.
1996
A new Afforestation Project to run nurseries and plant trees in Khibang-Nangi Area was launched.
1997
Self-reliance Plan for Nurseries up to 2003 was formulated.iNursery Management Committees and the Fund for Sustainable Management of Nurseries were introduced.
Multi-Dimensional Annapurna Conservation Project (MAC) was completed.
November 1997 "The Environment of Our Village: textbook for the education on the local area and its environment in Myagdi District, Nepal"(2nd edition) was published.
March 1998
"Participatory Development and Environmental Conservation of Nepali Mountain Villages by NGO: the evaluation report of the Multi-Dimensional Annapurna Conservation Project, 1992-1997" was published.
May 1998 "Development of Nepali Mountain Villages: the impact of rope lines on the nature and the people of Sikha Valley" was published.
February 2000
The Institute for Himalayan Conservation was authorized as a specified nonprofit corporation by Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
March 2000
Fieldwork was undertaken for the evaluation of the Afforestation Project in the Khibang-Nangi Area.
June 2000
"Evaluation Report of the Forest Conservation Project in Myagdi District" was published.
August 2000
A new plan for the self-reliance to be implemented up to FY2003 was designed on the basis of the findings of the evaluation of the Afforestation Project in Khibang-Nangi Area. (The plan includes delegation of the budget execution to Nursery Management Committees, greater emphasis on cash-crop cultivation, etc.)
March 2001
"Report of the Field Visit to the Myagdi District Forest Conservation Project in August 2000" was published.
July 2001
Chitre Forest Conservation Project in Chitre Village was completed. (The nursery was closed upon the completion of the afforestation.)
August 2001
Quarterly transfer of the budgets to Nursery Management Committees started.
January 2003
The workshop on the Afforestation Project in the Khibang-Nangi Area was held. Extension of the assistance to FY2007 was decided and the plan towards self-reliance was formulated.
May 2003 "Report of the Workshop on the Nursery Management Self-Reliance Plan"was published.
October 2003
-June 2004
Evaluation was undertaken upon the completion of the Three-Year Plan for the IHC.

Fieldwork was undertaken for the evaluation of the achievement during the Three-Year Plan. > Record of the Fieldwork and Photos
August 2004
"Report of the Evaluation upon the Completion of the Three-Year Plan of the IHC: Community forests have been revived!"was published.
December 2004

Fieldwork was undertaken for the formulation of the new three-year plan for the IHC. > Record of the Fieldwork
July 2005 Community Forest Project was launched in Narchyang and Salija Areas. > Details of the project
March 2007 The 2nd Phase of the Community Forest Project in Narchyang and Salija Areas started.
March 2008 The Afforestation Project in the Khibang-Nangi Area was completed. A total of approximately 1500 hectares, nearly equal to the size of the Shibuya Ward of Tokyo, was confirmed to be reforested with about 700 thousand trees.
